What do we do?

About America's Second Harvest

America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend is located in Tallahassee, Florida. This organization caters to those who face hunger on a daily basis. With several more locations much like this one, America's Second Harvest aims to provide those in need with meals and daily essentials. The Big Bend operates on a mission statement, that not only includes providing meals, but to educate the surrounding community about hunger and the impact it holds on the people who face it. By volunteering and donating, we the community can change lives and continue to fight hunger and feed hope.

About ENC 1145: A Service Learning Course

ENC 1145 is a service based learning course, which encourages students to engage in their community. By providing their efforts and outreach, students are able to actively be members of their community, and take part in making a difference. Not only is volunteer service a requirement for this course, but writing plays a large component in making this course an expression of our work. First year composition courses at Florida State University teach writing as a recursive and frequently collaborative process of invention, drafting, and revising. Writing is both personal and social, and students should learn how to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. By using both writing and community outreach, students will understand the power of their writing and work, and its transferability into their personal and professional lives.
