Reflections on My Media Campaigns

Manitra Chavanamest

As I signed up for this class, I did not know what to expect from taking a creative writing class that incorporate community service into the course. I have always believed that writing courses are meant to improve our writing skills and nothing else. That is why I walked into the class without any solid expectations. I did, however, expect to read and write just like any other English course while doing community service, as the course title suggests. As I looked over the syllabus, I was initially confused over some of the project that we were assigned to do. The Media Campaign and the last group project are, in my opinion, not what I was expecting to do in a second level college English course. From what I understand, the media campaign is more of a digital design project with writings on the side rather than a project in English class that incorporate digital design. However, there is more to the project that I expected. It made me think critically of how to incorporate my writing to different types of media. Because research paper is not the only type of writing that we will encounter throughout our academic and professional career, learning how to adapt our writing to different types of media are also essential, in my opinion. My favorite part of this course is the class discussion. Instead of assigning us pages to read and take a quiz on what we read, we came to class and prepared to discuss the topic. I believed that by different opinions that stem from different people would make learning more effective than me moralizing information. Mini-ethnography project, which we wrote as a research paper has taught me the most. As a college student, it is essential to learn how to write a research paper as well as incorporating sources into the paper. This project also had taught me some perspective of our community as a nation and as a city that I would have never realized. For instance, people as many as 14 millions are suffering from hunger because they could not afford every of their expenses. The issue is still an undergoing issue that not many people realized the severity of the issue. As a community member, I have realized that there are many people out there who need our help and we should help by participating in community service as a way of giving back to the community.
